Costa Rica
Lend a hand at one of Costa Rica's only special needs schools while exploring the tropical countryside and beaches of this Central American paradise
The Setting
Awareness of special needs education is beginning to grow in Costa Rica. In fact, the nation is pioneering a system of mental health teams that work across the country to provide care to children with autism and other disorders. Based in the tropical northern city of Liberia, we'll have access to some of Costa Rica's most progressive special needs projects as well as the rainforests, beaches and wildlife that Costa Rica is known for. Spend ten days engaging in professional exchange with local teachers, students and parents while taking time to learn about the "Pura Vida" lifestyle of this laid-back Central American country.
Our Project
Our partner, Centro de Enseñanza Especial de Liberia (The Center of Special Education in Liberia), is one of the leading public special education schools in Northern Costa Rica. Home to nearly 150 students, the school provides services for special needs students from the entire region. We'll engage in a variety of hands-on activities including applied behavioral analysis (ABA), occupational and speech therapy & early childhood intervention skills trainings.
Culture & Exploration
In addition to our work at Centro de Enseñanza Especial de Liberia, we'll explore a different facet of Costa Rican culture each day. One afternoon, learn how to cook iconic Costa Rican dishes with a local chef. Another, venture into one of Costa Rica's largest national parks to zip-line through the jungle, tube down a river and relax in hot springs. You'll even have the chance to visit a sanctuary for monkey and sloths along the way. Over the weekend, we'll head to the coast and spend a night on one of Costa Rica's tropical white sand beaches.
